Trinkle Dance is based on the work of the same name for trombone and piano, which also appears as the third movement of my sonata for bass trombone and piano. The original clocks in around three and a half minutes, which seemed too short for a band piece, so I added some new material when making this arrangement. Trinkle Dance was originally in ABA' form, and I lengthened the B section and added a C section before the reprise. One side effect of these changes is that the piece now traverses all three octatonic scales, with each section focused on a different one of these scales. Each section also has its own rhythmic profile: 6/8 with 3/4 cross-rhythms in the A section, a superposition of implied 3/4 and 9/8 meters in the B section, and 15/8 in the C section. Trinkle Dance always felt a bit like a carnival ride to me, and I hope that the effect is magnified in this arrangement.
